C3 CURATORIAL

One hot day in March, a group of classmates met up for Sin Swee Kee chicken rice at Bugis and had an important Conversation about continuing our learning and sharing our skill sets and experience to create and make things happen. We all had a common motivation (PS: See “FAQ”) and the details of the Conversation were mooted to others. Subsequently, everyone involved was fortuitously placed in the same group for a writing class and tasked to write a manifesto. A mixture of fate and shared ideas led to the conception of this curatorial collective.

FAQ

WHAT DRIVES US?

Having a safe space to take risks, incubate our individual ideas and experimentations and having a support network by which we could collaborate and launch concrete undertakings related to artistic expression.

WHAT ARE OUR SHARED VALUES?

  • The openness towards undertaking projects no matter how small or oblique its effects seem to be, or how ambitious and ridiculously idealistic it sounds at first.

  • We believe in embracing our individualities, expanding our minds through learning, discussing, and creating possibilities and ideas.

  • The belief that the freedom to think, examine, interpret, position and interact will add to the vibrancy of dialogues on art and culture.

  • We value kindness, inclusivity and respect to all.

WHAT DO WE DO?

  1. Open Book: We read, discuss and discover together

  2. Open Exchange: We brainstorm together and explore curatorial ideas

  3. Open Collab: We make exhibitions together and produce publications together

  4. Open Chat: We “lim kopi” together; conduct interviews and organise talks

WHAT IS OUR MODUS OPERANDI?

We carry out projects and programmes based on a majority vote, presence of adequate resources and the relevance of the project/programme to our shared values. As a collective, each member gets to decide, based on their personal interests, what or whose project they choose to be involved in; the level of participation they wish to partake in, and how. These expectations are communicated before the start of each project and members should abide by the rules and regulations to ensure the smooth completion of the project.

WHAT ARE OUR HOUSE RULES?

Our collective is built on openness, so trust is important in protecting every member and our curatorial projects. Abiding by the house rules will allow us to share our resources responsibly and create a safe and conducive environment for creative collaborations.

1. Let’s have Integrity

Having integrity in our thoughts, words and actions includes respecting the efforts of others and treating each other with respect. Let’s embrace our shared values at all times. This also means keeping all shared ideas within the collective (unless otherwise agreed) and respecting the personal privacy and data of every member.

We may critique institutions and challenge the notion of agency in our curatorial projects, but we won’t run afoul of the law! Maintaining integrity in our actions and recordkeeping means acting in accordance to the law and keeping accurate records of financial accounts.

2. Let’s uphold our Responsibilities

Let’s be responsible and accountable to each other. If you foresee and/or discover any potential conflicts of interests in relation to projects by the collective, or, are unable to carry out the tasks you have committed to doing so, share these with your group. Let’s support one another by brainstorming together and sharing ideas and advice.
